Veterinary worker: We have changed nothing in our protocol

Anonymous – New York

I work in a 24/7 veterinary hospital. While I am very grateful to have a paycheck, as we are considered essential workers, I cannot help but be upset with the disrespect for employees and their families due to the lack of proper measures taken to prevent the spread of disease.

I have multiple coworkers with young children, as well as someone in my household with respiratory susceptibility. I am still working 8-hour shifts with normal pay, and am expected to attend clients as if nothing has changed. People are still entering the building from all over New York on a daily basis. We have changed nothing in our cleaning protocol outside of using alcohol to wipe down door handles an extra time each day. There has been no formal instruction about COVID-19, our options for leave, or protocol changes to better protect employees.

Other veterinary hospitals around the US have either closed in response to the pandemic crisis, or instituted electronic appointments or curbside services. Hospitals and clinics in hot spot areas like New York have suspended non-essential services and remain open for emergencies.

I have PPE, and access to cleaning supplies. I would just love for my employer to give a damn about the fact that we could be actively spreading this disease every day.
